In today’s world, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are increasingly used in every part of our lives – for learning, for entertainment and play, at work, and for everyday communication. Our digital competencies are an important and essential part of the literacies that we use every day. Digital competencies allow us to be able to engage more fully in a digital and text-mediated society. As literacy educators, you play an important role to support your learners through these changes and enable them to fully benefit from the opportunities of technologies for lifelong learning.

This course is designed for literacy educators to develop the knowledge, skills and values that form the digital competencies for literacy instruction. The course will:

  • Share innovative and creative ways to integrate technologies into literacy education and how they can transform the ways you learn and teach. 
  • Develop your capacity to create learning materials and environments using digital tools that increase curiosity and inspiration in your learners. 
  • Support your professional development by learning about technology and its use as a tool and resource for continuous learning.

Global: GEC-GAL Digital Competencies for Literacy Educators

In today’s world, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are increasingly used in every part of our lives – for learning, for entertainment and play, at work, and for everyday communication. This course is designed for literacy educators to develop the knowledge, skills and values that form the digital competencies for literacy instruction. This course is further contextualized to different national contexts through hybrid and in-person workshops with national technical working groups.

Nigeria: GEC-GAL Digital Competencies for Literacy Educators

This course is intended for the pilot training of literacy educators from Nigeria's six geopolitical zone and uses contextualized modules and learning materials developed by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) under the Global Education Coalition–Global Alliance for Literacy project on improving the digital competences of literacy educators. This training is conducted in a hybrid format by a national technical team made up of representatives from the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC), the Non-Governmental Association for Literacy Support Services (NOGALSS), the UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Abuja and national universities.
